Dick Van Dyke

celeb of the week dick van dyke apolloWith more movie credits to his name (82 and counting!) than there are states in the USA , Dick Van Dyke has been a staple in American cinema for ages. You may know him from his many Disney classics, such as Mary Poppins (1964) and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968), but he also had his own T.V show, The Dick Van Dyke Show from 1961- 1966 which was reprised as The New Dick Van Dyke Show and ran from 1971-1974. If you're a fan of Murder Mysteries, you would have enjoyed his series, Diagnosis Murder which ran from 1993-2001. Not one to settle down permanently, he still continues acting today.

Born December 13th, 1925 in West Plains Missouri, Dick Van Dyke was a church going boy who lived a pretty normal life. In high school, he discovered his love of acting in Drama class, but had also considered a career in ministry.

At 16 he took his first job as a radio announcer in Danville, Illinois. He chose not to finish high school, but instead made several eager attempts at enlisting into the armed forces. He was continually denied due to a lack of weight, as he was a tall and skinny youth, but he finally got accepted into the United States Air Force as a radio announcer and also entertained troops as part of the Special Services.

He won a Tony for his stage performance in the musical, Bye Bye Birdie and also has a star on the Walk of Fame in Hollywood, CA. Believe it or not, he has never professionally trained as a dancer and did not start dancing until he was in his 30's. He wasn't in a movie until he was 36 and did not receive his high school diploma until he was 78 years old!

So if you ever think that you're too old to start something, think again! "I've retired so many times now it's getting to be a habit." ~Dick Van Dyke
