Some Plumbing Problems Are Caused by Human Error
As they say, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. As a homeowner, you will definitely come to find this old adage is quite true. Being a little more mindful towards your plumbing as you go through everyday life will save you from unfortunate plumbing pitfalls in the future.
Here are some ways to take care of your plumbing:
1. Only Flush Toilet Paper
While most of us know we shouldn’t flush anything other than toilet paper and waste, sometimes we ignore our better instincts. We end up sending all sorts of things down the toilet including wipes, paper towels, disposable diapers and feminine-hygiene items. But, if you want to keep your pipes clear, don’t flush any products other than toilet paper. Even wipes labeled as flushable may clog your pipes. And, be careful not to send massive amounts of TP down the toilet all at once.
2. Grease Doesn’t Go Down the Drain
When you wash the dishes don’t ever purposefully pour oil down the drain. The grease in the oil will cling to your pipes and eventually turn into a huge clogging problem. Instead of pouring the grease in the sink, scrap plates, pots and pans into the garbage.
3. Use Your Garbage Disposal Carefully
Garbage disposals are often the first thing to go when it comes to plumbing problems. Many people mistakenly throw anything down the disposal, doing harm to their pipes.
Don’t put fruits or vegetables that are high in fiber in the garbage disposal. Heavy items like celery can dull the blades and cause the disposal to get stuck. As you use your disposal system, be sure to run lots of cold water down the sink to keep food particles from sticking to the pipes.
5. Avoid Hot Water in the Toilet
Some people may be under the perception that if hot water in the kitchen sink is helpful, then it’s even better in the toilet. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Most sinks are made of durable materials that are designed for hot water, while toilets are made for water that is at room temperature. Pouring any hot water in your toilet bowl can harm it. If your toilet clogs, use a plunger. If that doesn’t work, call Apollo for help.
6. Don’t Wait for an Emergency to Find a Good Plumber
Establishing a good working relationship with a plumbing company in Portland means you have someone to count on should you have an emergency. Plumbers are skilled tradespeople. You shouldn’t attempt complex plumbing tasks yourself. Often DIY plumbing leads to further problems and expenses.
Apollo Drain is your full-service plumbing company. We help homeowners and businesses in the Portland-metro area. Contact us for help maintaining or fixing your plumbing problems.
Fantastic customer service. We were out of town when tenants needed help with a plumbing issue. They let us know who was being dispatched to our house then followed up with a very detailed message post work. I would definitely use these guys again.
I can’t say enough good things about this company. Had a sewer repair needed and had a very short amount of time due to closing on a house sale. Every single person I encountered from Marquita doing logistics for my job to every member of the work crew. Friendly, communicated well, totally responsive and really cared to help me through this very stressful job. All of the people I encountered were role models for what a well run service business should be. Much thanks and appreciation. You’re great.
We had a leak and no hot water. Apollo came out same day and not only fixed the problem but made it better and gave us some good advice on our system. Very reasonable and great communication. Would definitely recommend.
Don is always so helpful and knowledgeable. I really appreciate all the crew members on the Apollo team. I'm a Property Manager so typically I will have several projects for Apollo to address during a single visit. They are easy to interact with and EXCELLENT plumbers. I highly recommend Apollo.
Scott, I would like to personally thank you for expediting our plumbing crisis we recently had. If the situation was not resolved immediately we would have had to close for a couple of days. This occured on a Friday for for us a pizza restaurant this would of been devastating. Thank you so much.

It's my absolute pleasure to recommend Karen Johnson at Apollo Drain and Rooter Service. I have had the pleasure of taking a class taught by Karen. Her knowledge and expertise is a huge advantage to my entire office. I know if I am in a pinch I can call the office and talk to someone! Their customer service is truly amazing, and I have had compliments from customers in the past.
